Per chi dice che il rock'n'roll è roba da fighetti, per chi afferma che non è un prodotto genuino, il personaggio che oggi celebriamo, nell'anniversario della sua nascita, sta lì a dimostrare il contrario! Ladies and gentlemen, JOHNNY THUNDERS! John Anthony Genzale Jr., nato a New York il 15 luglio del'52 da una famiglia originaria di Avellino, è statauna delle figure più importanti del rock'n'roll: chitarrista fondatore dei New York Dolls e degli Heartbreakers, il suo stile sporco, il suo look da junkie e il suo atteggiamento sfrontato, hanno influenzato in modo pervasivo tutto il punk a venire (e a noi scappa da ridere quando dicono che il punk nasce coi Ramones o coi Sex Pistols - con tutto il rispetto e l'amore che proviamo per Ramones e Sex Pistols...) ma anche il garage, il glam, l'hard rock, l'hair metal o lo street metal, e persino un certo tipo di cantautorato, marcio e sbilenco, che tanto va di moda tra i fanatici dell'indie. Purtroppo non aveva solo l'aria del tossico, era veramente un drogato peso: l'hanno trovato morto in una stanza d'albergo a New Orleans il 23 aprile del '91 per overdose di metadone. Anche se le circostanze del decesso sono rimaste un po'oscure, sta di fatto che comunque era già messo parecchio male..."Born to lose", "nato per perdere" recita il suo pezzo più celebre, ma diglielo tu, Johnny: il vero rock'n'roll non è fatto per nulla da perdenti!!
